THIRD PERSON

The car pulled up in front of the big old haveli; it was rusty, and the paint was fading. It had been five years since she stepped out from her earlier mansion. Those four walls always kept her safe, but who would keep her safe now?

Her Kabir? Would he?

Her steps trembled as she stepped out from the car, but soon two hands caught her. Avani helped her stand and asked, "Bhabhi, are you alright?" She nodded, fixing her saree.

Her dark red henna and  her bridal bangles shone in the sunlight; it was the month of March, which is usually pleasant and warm around Chittorgarh and Udaipur. The garden was blossomed with red roses and white daisies.

Her eyes landed on Kabir, and jealousy sparked. He didn't even give a damn about her, and there he was, showing and telling his P.A. Cecilia about the history and old architecture of here. Does he like her? Of course, he loves independent and strong women who can handle business and are not scared in crowds.

And she is exact opposite from them, she can't even speak properly between too many people. He never asked her to change but deep down he must have wanted her to.

She wanted him to look at her, the way he used to look her before. He is all hers now. she can go and hug him, kiss him, touch him but...  but he would not respond to any of them. She can go, place her head on his shoulder and cry her heart out but he would not hold her, he would not wipe her tears like he used to.

He laughed at something Cecilia said, and for a moment, she wanted to become her, the reason for his smile. She didn't want to stay as Priya; she wanted to become the rose he just kissed now.

"Safed Chamkadardni" Avani whispered, glaring at Cecilia from behind. A faint laugh escaped Priya's lips; at least she didn't have a cold and arrogant sister-in-law.

Kabir waved at Avani, asking her to come there, and Avani dragged Priya along with her. Her heart beat fast when she saw Cecilia standing close to him; it's her place—a voice screamed from inside of her. But she can't fight it.

So, she just simply smiled.

"Cecilia, she is my sister Avani, and she is-" Kabir stopped for a moment, and his smile dropped when he looked at her "-my wife, Priya."

Why so harsh all of a sudden? When he gives her this look, her world starts drifting away. There were tears in her eyes, but she managed to suppress them with a smile.

Cecilia offered a hand for a handshake to Avani. "Nice to meet you," she said, but Avani replied with the gesture of joining hands. "Namaste, kamini," she said. Kabir gave her a death glare knowing Cecilia didn't understand the Hindi word.

"She'll stay with us here until the renovation work of the badi haveli is done," Kabir told them, and a jab of a knife hit Priya's chest. Here with us? With Kabir? What if they are...? Questions started running in her head like a toy train.

Why not? Cecilia could be everything he needs, a beautiful lady with the ability to charm men. And the way Cecilia stared at Kabir is surely not of as an employee.

What if Cecilia steals her Kabir? What if he leaves her again and be with Cecilia? What if Cecilia plays the role of Mastani in her life, and she would be standing and staring at her Rao from afar just like Kashi Bai?

Her thoughts were broken by Avani's snap. "Lost in your delulu?" she said. Priya noticed Kabir already left with Cecilia, and she was standing here alone.

'Dur the jab humse to humare kwhabon ke paas the, or jab nazdik aa gye to ab humare kwhab unke paas hai' she thought to herself and started moving inside the haveli.

"Kabir Baba, zada kamre Khali saaf nahi hai choti haveli ke to Priya Bitiya ka saman aapke kamre mai hi rakh du na?" A servant asked him, and he looked at Priya before giving a nod. Why such a ruthless expression?

"Priya," he called out, did he just say her name? "From today, you will make my meals," he ordered, and her face brightened up. He wanted to eat food cooked by her own hands; what could be better than this? She'll now make everyday his favorite dishes pouring her love out on them.

Maybe this was not the response Kabir expected from Priya, so he said, "At least you would be of some use instead of sitting all day," and went off.

At least they both would share the same room at night, which was a relief for her, and she would have a chance to show him how much she loves him, to make him fall for her all over again.

She went to the kitchen with proud shoulders. "Priya, what are you doing here?" Bai asked. She was the elder maid of the house, generally the chef in charge of cooking. "Rao asked me to cook for him from today," she blushed, using the nickname she gave to him when they were young.

Kabir's mother always used to tease her among the ladies of the house by saying, "Priya to bas apni Kunwar Sa ki hai." She used to blush really hard at it. But indeed, Priya is completely of her Kunwar Sa.

She is tied to him by a thread, just like Radha was tied to Krishna. Even if he doesn't stay with her, she would stay silent and love him like Radha loved Kanha without any complaints. Things would end, people would change, but her love, her love for Kabir would stay the same.
. . . . . . . . . . .

She stayed awake till midnight, waiting for him, sitting on the bed with her favorite book. Where he was? It was not bothering her; she just wanted him to taste the kheer she made, especially for him. It's his favorite, after all.

It rained lightly in the evening, so the breeze coming from the window was chill and mixed with the smell of plants and soil. The wind was playing with her loose end of the saree and hair.

The door opened, and tired Kabir in a loose shirt and trousers entered the room, his hair messy, he yawned, stretching his arms. He must have overworked today, she thought, when he plopped himself on the bed.

"Which book are you reading, biwi?" It's him, in his usual teasing tone, trying to annoy her, but at least he is talking to her. He muttered the title 'His Royal Touch,' and a smirk appeared on his lips, "Romance novel, huh?"

"It's my favorite by Sonal Singh," she said with a hard blush. Of course, who doesn't like romance novels, especially when they are written by Author Sonal Singh?
Kabir licked his lips before saying, "Ishq to bas kitaboon ka hi accha lagta hai, asal mai to kambakht dhoke ka dusra naam hai," and this taunt was directed at her.

"Then tell me your favorite line from this favorite book of yours," he asked, getting up from bed and opening the wooden almirah. And she was glad that he asked; she had a perfect one in return, "Ishq se kya gilla kare, bhul to hamari hai, jo do dafa bina dil walo ko dil gawa baithe hum." No wonder why she loves Ms. Sonal's books.

Kabir threw a light mattress and a pillow on the floor and walked toward her, he leaned down, his face inches away from Priya's, "Kabir yah ghar prem ka, khaala ka ghar nahi. Sees utaare haathi kari, so paithe ghar maanhi," he quoted, running his fingers through her hair.

A wide smirk on his face, "Kabir ke dohe hai yaad rakha kariye," he said, pulling away from her and picked up the bowl of kheer.

She closed the book, making an angry pout, "Aap to chup hi rahiye, bade aaye Bapu Bazar ke Gulzar."

He placed the empty bowl on the nightstand and adjusted the blanket on the bed, "Sleep now, it's nearly midnight," he said. She knew the mattress and pillow on the floor were for her; there's no way he is going to pull her into his embrace and let her sleep there this easily.

But before she went to sleep, Priya held his cheeks tight with her both hands and forcefully kissed him, making a perfect heart shape on his left cheek with her lipstick. He tried to protest, but it was a quick one, "Goodnight, Rao," she said, lying on the thin mattress on the floor.

He tried to wipe her lipstick, but it was not coming off. Damn! Which brand of lipstick she used, he thought.

"Dhiyan se soyega niche badi-badi chipkaliyan chalti hai," he tried to scare her, knowing her relationship with lizards.

"Aap se badi to ek bhi nahi hogi, sukar hai," she replied with sarcasm.
